90’s Influences are Still Going Strong

Instead of slowing down, the 90’s influence on fashion is growing even stronger. From wider pants and shorter tops to mini dresses and headbands, the trends for this season are a definite throwback.

Colors

The muted, warm neutrals that have been everywhere lately are taking a backseat to bright, saturated colors this season. This is great news for those who look best in cool or bright colors, or anyone who wants to brighten up their winter wardrobe!

Adding a trending color is the easiest way to make your wardrobe look current. Have fun with color this season, and if you love a color that isn’t best for you, put it on the bottom, away from your face!

Patterns & Textures

During the colder months, we always see a lot of plaid and Fair Isle patterns trending, and it’s the same this year. There isn’t really a pattern that sticks out as newsworthy this season. The bigger story is texture.

In Winter 2021, texture is the trend. We’re seeing lots of cable, waffle and shaker knit sweaters, as well as ribbed knits and corduroy. Texture is a great way to add interest to even the simplest silhouettes and make your entire look more expensive.

Fabrics

Two big fabric trends for Winter 2021 are leather and sweater knits. Leather is showing up in all sorts of different colors and silhouettes, so if you’re afraid to try the trend for fear of looking too biker-chic, simply avoid black and anything that’s too tight, too short, or too revealing. A pair of burgundy leather trousers has a much different vibe than a black leather mini.

Sweater knits are one of the biggest trends of Winter 2021. Yes, we’re seeing tons of sweaters, but it goes beyond that. Sweater dresses, sweater pants, and sweater loungewear are also having a moment. If you live in a warmer climate, look for lightweight versions that will give you the look without the warmth.

Tops for Winter 2021

Shorter tops continue to be the thing, but I’ve seen more tunic sweaters pop up this winter, so if you still love leggings or skinnies with a longer top, you’re in luck this season.

The current trends for tops continue to be all about the shoulders and neckline–specifically high necks, like mock necks and turtlenecks, and statement shoulders with puff details or ruffles. These looks are great for women who are smaller on top than they are on the bottom, or who want to bring the attention upward.  They’re tougher women with broad shoulders, big busts, or shorter necks.  These looks can emphasize those things, which may not be what you want.  As always, if you like the way they look go for it. But if you’re not loving the effect they have, look for more open necklines or shoulders that don’t make a statement.

Shackets are still going strong this season. Some of our ladies love them, and some struggle and feel a little frumpy in the oversized, thick material that doesn’t drape well. If this is a trend you’ve wanted to love, but can’t find the right fit, here are a couple of ideas. First, look for a shorter one. Long and oversized can be tough to feel good in. Second, look for a lighter fabric. The lightweight the fabric, the more it will drape, and look less boxy. Finally, look for one that has more structure through the shoulder. I’ve seen some that have a back yoke and even an inverted pleat in the back–those are going to fit better in the shoulder and look less overwhelming.

Pants for Winter 2021

Pants have been getting wider for a few seasons, and Winter 2021 is no different. We’re still seeing a lot of straight legs, but bootcuts and flares have also become more prevalent this season. While stores are still selling plenty of skinnies, they’re just not looking fresh and current. It’s time to try a new (or throwback) silhouette.

Skirts & Dresses for Winter 2021

The 90’s influence shows up strong in dresses and skirts for Winter 2021. This season, we’re seeing lots of satin skirts and slip dresses, which are definite 90’s throwbacks.

Miniskirts and minidresses are another 90’s trend making a comeback this season, and they’re a nice change from the midi-skirts that have ruled the scene for the last couple of years. If you’re a little shy about showing your legs, pair your short(er) skirts and dresses with tall boots, opaque tights…or both!

Remember, if a trend doesn’t suit your style or make you feel great, skip it. Not every trend is going to be for you, and that’s ok. But, don’t close your mind to every new look that comes along. Don’t be afraid to try new things and have fun with your style.
